So after countless trips through Decatur on the way to my mom’s farm in Sunset, I decided to detour on Wednesday and check out the little fried pie place that had been taunting my culinary imagination for months. It was cold, two inches of snow had littered the ground, and the notion of a warm fried pie was more than I could resist. I was not disappointed.

At the Fried Pie Shoppe, pies are hand-prepared and deep-fried. Though they offer the usual fruit pies, they also offer a wide variety of meat pies, like the Bacon Egg and Cheese and the Tex-Mex: beef, cheddar, refried beans, jalapeno and onion. Be forewarned, pies are served up in paper wrappers – sans fork – and their contents are of mouth maulingly hot proportions. Owner Nancy makes sure that her folks hand-make each fried pie – fillings included -  simply because it literally runs in her blood – the menu will inform you that Fulton’s recipe comes from her grandmother’s 1893 recipe.

pieThe Fried Pie Shoppe’s fruit and meat pies were simply outrageous. The fillings – we tried apricot, lemon, apple and the Tex-Mex – were  encased in some of the most tender, flaky crust I’ve ever encountered and there was nary a soggy spot to be found. Leftovers, coupled with a glass of the cream-heavy, raw milk from Decatur’s Diamond B Dairy, resulted in an attack of foodie nirvana.

While there, I learned they have a new location in Bridgeport and that the original location can be found just north of the Red River, in Davis, Oklahoma at the Turner Falls exit.
