To say that the BBQ at Giddings’ City Meat Market is divine would be an understatement. So I was excited to hear from my Dad today that they’d pulled over to an RV stop just outside the city’s limits. I implored him, “Oh my gawd, Dad, you have to stop at City Meat Market for BBQ while you’re there!”

I further explained that if they were to order the generously portioned brisket plate, to save the leftovers and make a brisket omelette with green peppers, topped with cheddar and salsa.

I first discovered City Meat Market on many a back roads trip – rife with wildflowers and a gorilla in La Grange – to my Dad’s place in Ingleside on The Bay, Texas, just outside of Corpus Christi. I’d stopped on a Thursday afternoon, just a hair short of missing the lunch rush, and was immediately told that they were already out of sausage, pork butt and chicken and that they were running low on just about everything else. I had a companion and we ordered the pork ribs and brisket.

It was love at first bite. Every item was post oak smoked to perfection and when I was overheard whining that they were out of pork butt, the old timer ladling beans sweetly chided me that the locals often have to call ahead a day before in order to get the items they crave.

Giddings is just4 hours or so south of DFW, just an hour and a half east of Austin and just two and a handful of hours from both San Antonio and Houston – either way, the BBQ is more than worth the drive.
