So, it was my 35th birthday this past weekend. Days of shots and full on clubbing are definitely behind me and I much prefer to sit relax and unwind with my friends without having to shout over a pumping bass line or being herded in to a crowded bar.

tapas2Wanting to celebrate with friends and remembering that years ago for my bachelorette party we’d had tapas, I decided to start the event at a tapas restaurant. So for my 35th birthday I chose Sangria tapas bar in Uptown Dallas.

As soon as we pulled up and valet parked I realized we had come somewhere very special: the smart, red canopy covered a large patio which was full of people from all walks of life enjoying some eye catching dishes.

Our extremely handsome server, Alex, was very helpful and knowledgeable about all the dishes. There were 3 different types of sangria on offer: white, red and rose all of which sounded delicious, so we sampled all 3! They were all amazing and refreshing, but in the end we settled on a rose ( the base being champagne) and a red.

Then the food began!

One of our party, Lindsey was pregnant and Alex was very careful to advise which dishes has pasteurised and non pasteurised cheese so she could choose her dishes in complete confidence.

They gave us a sampler of all different types of tapas available and JR, the manager, was also on hand to guide us through the various wonderful creations in front of us. For the samplers we enjoyed Spanish meats and a cheese plate. The highlight had to be the Bacon Wrapped Dates Stuffed with almonds & Cabrales cheese.

We decided to start with something from “the garden,” so we chose yummy vegetable dishes: oyster mushrooms and asparagus along with two types of croquettes: one with shrimp and crab the other with cheese and ham.

tapasNext we moved onto “the land” by ordering pork and chicken skewers which were cooked to perfection. Sometimes skewers can be burnt and stuck to the skewer and end up flying across the plate when you try you remove them – NOT the case here, they were so succulent and flavorsome and made with the best quality meat. The marinated ground lamb skewer with Catalan spinach & yogurt cumin dressing were exquisite and literally melted in your mouth. The potato gratin and oyster mushroom and asparagus sides complimented the meat dishes perfectly. Then we nibbled on Spanish meatballs in sherry tomato sauce, breadcrumbs & parsley crumble and patatas bravas: crispy potatoes served with aioli & spicy tomato sauce. The meatballs were a delight to the taste buds.

All the dishes were easily big enough for two people to share, but remember, you order a variety to make up your dinner. The six of us had more than enough food to satisfy us and none of us felt like we had overeaten or too full to move. And we had great conversation in between while sipping on the refreshing sangrias which complemented the food perfectly. In fact, as one of the birthday guest was pregnant, they were even thoughtful enough to bring her a virgin mojito so she could still feel part of the party!

As it was my birthday desert had to be eaten! Lindsey and I chose the special of the day which was a chocolate and truffle Bombe, which was quite literally the BOMB! The mousse inside was so soft and sweet it made my tongue tingle! However if chocolate isn’t your thing then a delectable Apple tart on a very light puff pastry was also enjoyed by members of the party. Again the deserts can be shared , but they are so good you may not want to!

As we were leaving, I was still seeing some of the most wonderful looking dishes coming out from the kitchen, making  sure I’ll certainly be making a return trip!
